Skin cancer Checks

Why regular skin checks are essential

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In fact, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70. Regular skin checks are one of the most effective ways to detect changes early when skin cancer is easiest to treat.

Skin checks aren’t just for people who spend hours in the sun. Even if you take care to use sunscreen and cover up, it’s still possible to develop skin cancer. Having your skin assessed by a dermatologist means any concerns can be identified and addressed promptly.

Skin cancer risk factors

Anyone can develop skin cancer, but you may be at higher risk if you:

  • Have fair skin that burns easily
  • Have a history of sunburn, tanning or solarium use
  • Spend a lot of time outdoors for work or leisure
  • Have many moles, freckles or atypical naevi
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Have a family or personal history of skin cancer.

If you fall into one of these groups, it’s especially important to stay up to date with regular checks.

What happens during a mole and skin cancer check?

A skin cancer check is a thorough examination by one of our dermatologists. During your consultation, we will:

  • Review your medical history and any concerns you have about specific moles or spots
  • Examine your skin using a dermatoscope (a magnifying device with light) to help detect changes not visible to the naked eye
  • Assess any areas you’re worried about and discuss next steps if needed.

If we identify a mole or spot that requires closer monitoring, we may recommend further imaging or a biopsy. In some cases, we’ll suggest a full-body scan with Vectra WB360 for more advanced assessment.

Full body scan with Vectra WB360

For patients at higher risk or those with many moles, a full body scan can provide an even more detailed picture.

Using the Vectra WB360 (the world’s most advanced 3D imaging system), we capture high-resolution images of your entire skin surface in seconds. This technology allows us to:

  • Create a complete baseline record of your moles and skin spots
  • Detect even the smallest changes in your skin over time
  • Reduce unnecessary biopsies by tracking changes accurately.

This service is recommended for patients who require long-term mole mapping and advanced monitoring.

FAQs

How often should I get a skin check?

Most Australians should have a skin cancer check every 12 months. If you have multiple risk factors or a personal/family history of skin cancer, we may recommend checks every 6 months. Book earlier if you notice a new or changing spot.

With skin checks, a dermatologist closely examines your skin using a dermatoscope. This type of examination can be booked online via HotDoc.

A full body scan uses advanced 3D imaging (Vectra WB360) to map and monitor your skin over time. Call the clinic on 9654 2426 to book.

You don’t need a referral for a skin cancer check or full body scan. However, having one from your GP may help you access Medicare rebates.

If we detect an area of concern, we’ll discuss the most appropriate next step. This may include monitoring, biopsy, or treatment depending on the findings.
